Who can apply for the Choral Scholars Program?
The program is open to high school-aged singers entering grades 9-12 for the
2026-2027 academic year, including public school, private school, and
homeschool students.
Do students need formal vocal training or private lessons?
Not at all. While prior musical experience is helpful, students do not need formal
classical training to apply. Ample practice resources (recordings, part tracks,
pronunciation tracks, etc.) are provided to all singers to aid in music learning
throughout the semester. We are looking for singers with musical potential,
curiosity, commitment, and a desire to grow.
What kind of singers are you looking for?
We are looking for students who are enthusiastic about music-making, eager to
learn, and interested in being positive leaders within a collaborative ensemble
environment.
Strong musicianship is important, but so are reliability, curiosity, kindness, and a
willingness to participate fully in the life of the organization.
What ensembles may Choral Scholars participate in?
Choral Scholars may be placed in one or more ensembles depending on vocal
needs, scheduling, experience, and student interest. Possible placements may
include:
• Chester River Chorale (Our main 115-voice SATB choir)
• Aurora (Our new treble choir for sopranos and altos only)
• Chester Chamber Singers (Our auditioned, select SATB ensemble)
What is the rehearsal schedule?
Most rehearsals take place on Monday evenings at the Presbyterian Church of
Chestertown. Rehearsal times vary by ensemble and may occur between
approximately 5:15pm and 9:30pm.
Exact schedules and ensemble placements will be discussed following auditions.
Concerts will take place during the second weeks of December and April.
Are Choral Scholars expected to attend every rehearsal?
Consistent attendance and preparation are important parts of the program.
However, we understand that students often balance academics, extracurricular
activities, athletics, theater, family commitments, and other responsibilities.
What does the scholarship include?
Selected students receive a $1,000 annual stipend, awarded in two installments:
• $500 following the holiday concert cycle
• $500 following the spring concert cycle
What kinds of leadership opportunities are included?
Each Choral Scholar is given a personalized leadership role based on their
interests, strengths, and availability. Opportunities may include mentorship,
outreach, communications assistance, organizational support, youth
engagement, or participation in smaller ensembles and special projects.
Is this program only for students interest in majoring in music?
Not at all. While the program may be especially valuable for students considering
future studies in music or the arts, it is also intended for students who simply love
singing and want to grow within a supportive and high-level musical community.
Where do rehearsals and auditions take place?
Auditions for the 2026-2027 season will take place at:
